When we start graduate school, we are alone.

We all are, usually, alone in our own labs, huddling over our piles of work that are too big for the day. But really it takes one person to look up and around and say “HEY” to the worker next to them. “Do you want to get a cup of coffee?” And maybe over that cup of coffee they talk about the day and the pile of work.

They start to get daily cups of coffee, realizing that the pile isn’t getting smaller and will always be there when they get back.

It just takes one person to look up and start a coffee hour and invite everyone, everyone who always said they had to work and that there wasn’t any time to get coffee. But now that there’s a coffee hour and everyone’s going, suddenly there is time and the pile doesn’t seem so important anymore.
